Timeshare Facts: A Year End Wrap Up

Have you ever witnessed something that was just FLAT OUT WRONG, and wondered if you had the power to change it?

For too long, the timeshare industry and ARDA – the timeshare trade group – have knowingly misled the people who own or are considering owning a timeshare.

We think this is wrong.  And it seems many others do too.

Timeshare Facts was created last summer to pull the curtain back on timeshare tactics –

…the hard pressure sales, the misrepresentations, and often outright lies;

…the lack of disclosure, sham cancelation policies and non-existent customer service.

We wanted to show just what they do.

To raise awareness and to show the high personal cost of callous timeshare manipulations.

And we’ve done it… using documents that are publicly available and posted on our website.  We have shared dozens of the first-hand timeshare horror stories sent to us by our readers.

• Michelle Jabeur’s lawsuit introduced us to the high-pressure sales tactics required by Diamond Resorts

• Mark Lucas and Kimberly Wallace’s lawsuit not only the duress of a seven-hour high-pressure sales pitch, but also how Bluegreen Vacations did not allow them to review any purchase transaction documents

• Diana Henderson’s lawsuit showed us how Wyndham intentionally overbooks or oversells its timeshare units

• Robert Kasprzyk was fired after he refused to lie to Diamond Resort customers and he warned about never ending fees in his lawsuit A lawsuit from a group in Knoxville describes the Westgate Resorts business model as inviting fraud, and identifies VP Richard Siegal as telling sales reps to outright lie to close a sale

Violations of the Military Lending Act were charged in lawsuits against Westgate Resorts and Bluegreen Vacations, putting our national security in jeopardy

Then there was the list of the 10 worst timeshares.  We were not surprised to find Westgate Resorts listed at the absolute #1 worst, were you?  Westgate even holds the record of the most sued timeshare company.

We shared 2,170 pages of complaints about Diamond Resorts Timeshares that are on file with the Florida Attorney General’s office.

“Lied” “Fraud” “Pressure” were the big takeaways in those cases.

Wyndham Resorts came up right behind with 1,648 pages of complaints against it on file at the Florida Attorney General’s office.  “…all of these sales reps should be ashamed of themselves” – said one.  We only wish there were!

Our reader responses broke our hearts.

“You do not want to leave this legacy for your heirs!!!”

“Lie, cheat, steal, and lie cheat and steal some more…”

“Broken promises and FLAT OUT LIES!  With no way to get out of a bad deal…

“All we wanted was to be able to go on vacation for an affordable price but now we aren’t even able to afford necessities.”

“came time for me to try to get rid of it because I was retired and on a fixed income. And that’s when the nightmare really began…

“I called him within the 3-day rescission period to no avail.  Of course he never returned my calls…”

We have NEVER been able to use any of the benefits – not once!”

All these voices need to be heard.

We are Timeshare Facts.

Our goal is to shine a light on the unethical practices of the timeshare industry.

We will be taking a short break until the New Year.  But there is still so much work to do.

The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) represents timeshare companies in Washington, DC.

Jason Gamel is the President and CEO of ARDA.  Maybe he should hear how these sales tactics impact the lives of real people, not just the bottom line of timeshare companies.

Let’s email him at jgamel@arda.org.

Or… here is a list ARDA published of its VIPs across all its member companies. Maybe you can find your timeshare company executive and share your story with them too!

Tell us your timeshare horror story, too.  Send it to us at info@timesharefacts.com.
